Description
Cozy and budget-friendly, this Hamburger Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes is a 30-minute,
family-approved comfort dinner made with ground beef, beef broth, and creamy potatoes.
Ingredients
For the Hamburger Gravy:
1 lb (450g) ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
2½ cups beef broth (low sodium)
2 tbsp flour
2 tbsp butter or oil
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp black pepper
Salt to taste
Optional: ½ tsp paprika or dried herbs (thyme or parsley)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
2 lbs (900g) Yukon gold or russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
4 tbsp butter
½ cup milk (or dairy-free option)
Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Make the Mashed Potatoes: Add cubed potatoes to a large pot of salted water. Boil 12–15 minutes, until fork-tender.
2. Drain well. Mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until creamy. Keep warm.
3. Make the Hamburger Gravy: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and onion until beef is browned and onion is soft. Drain excess grease if needed.
4. Stir in garlic, onion powder, black pepper, and optional paprika/herbs. Cook 1 minute.
5. Push beef to one side. Melt butter on the empty side, then stir in flour to make a roux. Cook 1–2 minutes.
6. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to combine with the roux. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened.
7. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and more pepper. Thin with a splash of broth or water if needed.
8. To Serve: Spoon mashed potatoes onto plates and ladle hamburger gravy on top. Garnish with parsley or black pepper.
Notes
Chef’s Tips:
• Potatoes: Yukon Gold = creamy; Russet = extra fluffy.
• Shortcuts: Use instant mashed potatoes or canned gravy in a pinch (thicken canned gravy with a cornstarch slurry if needed).
• Flavor Boost: Add 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce or a splash of cream to the gravy.
• Too thick? Whisk in broth. Too thin? Simmer longer or add 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp cold water.
